They recover the lifeless bodies of more than 30 migrants after a shipwreck off the coast of Tunisia

The Tunisian Coast Guard has reported on Monday that it has recovered the lifeless bodies of 31 migrants who drowned after suffering a shipwreck off the country’s coast while trying to reach Europe.

Sources close to the matter have indicated in statements by the newspaper ‘Nessma’ that the bodies have been found in the vicinity of the cities of Sfax, Mahdia and the island of Kerkenna.

Thus, they have explained that among the deceased there are at least two minors. Preliminary information suggests that most of them come from sub-Saharan African countries, although the bodies have been made available to forensic doctors with the aim of achieving their identification.

In early April, the Coast Guard reported that more than 14,000 migrants have already been detained trying to reach Europe throughout 2023. Every day, hundreds of migrants from sub-Saharan Africa try to cross by boat from Tunisia and Libya to Italy, but many of them lose their lives in the attempt.
