Viewers of the popular show “Fantasmic!” Disneyland were shocked this weekend when the fire-breathing animatronic dragon suddenly burst into flames during a performance.
No injuries were reported in the Saturday night fire at the Southern California theme park, the Anaheim Fire Department reported.
Ryan Laux, a frequent Disneyland visitor, said fire has always been a part of the “Fantasmic!” presentation, but he knew something was wrong when the flames weren’t coming from where they normally do.
“The head started burning instead of the fire coming out,” said Laux, who lives in Los Angeles and videotaped the fire.
The show stopped almost immediately “and then right after that the dragon started to catch fire and the whole body was on fire,” he told the AP on Sunday.
The show takes place twice a night near the park’s famous Tom Sawyer Island. At the crucial point, Mickey Mouse is confronted by the giant dragon named Maleficent.
Laux said that Mickey disappeared from the stage as soon as the dragon’s head was engulfed in flames.
The extent of the damage is unknown.
