Forum it involves States, the private sector and civil society, as well as ECLAC’s subsidiary bodies, development banks and other United Nations agencies. The Forum should provide useful peer-to-peer learning opportunities, through means such as voluntary reviews, sharing of good practices, and discussion of common goals.
The objective of the Forum Meetings is to provide those responsible for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda in the countries, a space conducive to learning among peers through a series of interactive sessions in which, through the discussion of common experiences and goals, good practices are identified that allow the member countries of the Forum to offer recommendations and present them to the Forum High-Level Political Party on Sustainable Development, under the auspices of the General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council, as part of the regional contributions to the global process of follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda.
The First Meeting of the Forum was held in Mexico City, in 2017; the Second Meeting was held at the ECLAC headquarters in Santiago, in 2018; the Third Meeting took place at the ECLAC headquarters in Santiago, in 2019; the Fourth Meeting was held virtually, in 2021; the Fifth Meeting took place in San José, in 2022, and this Sixth Meeting will be held at ECLAC headquarters in Santiago, from April 26 to 28, 2023, under the theme “Accelerate the recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic and the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at all levels”.
On this occasion, the Executive Secretary of ECLAC will present the document Latin America and the Caribbean halfway to 2030: progress and proposals for acceleration, sixth report on regional progress and challenges of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in Latin America and the Caribbean.
In the document, which reviews the evolution and current state of progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals 6, 7, 9, 11 and 17, as well as the projection of its fulfillment in 2030, it is pointed out that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has been added to a cascade of crises that have negatively affected the potential fulfillment of the goals, as shown by the respective indicators. Therefore, it is time for bold and transformative policies that offer realistic and pragmatic solutions to realign legitimate ambitions to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals with the capacities of countries to achieve them. A call is made to strengthen the strategic planning of public institutions, including prospective capacities for the construction of desirable development scenarios for the future that encompass both public and private efforts and international cooperation in order to redirect actions to the full achievement of the 2030 Agenda, in which the participation of civil society must be strengthened to quickly resume the path towards the SDGs.
The ministers, high authorities and other relevant actors will have the opportunity to discuss and share good practices in 5 Tables in which the challenges of each of the SDGs that must be examined this year will be addressed.
Additionally, a Round Table has been organized entitled “Road to the Summit on the SDGs. Transformative initiatives: creating opportunities to strengthen the commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its full implementation at all levels”, which will take place on April 28, and which will provide a space to discuss transformative initiatives to face the global challenges and create opportunities to reinforce commitment to the 2030 Agenda and accelerate the full implementation of the SDGs, with a view to the Summit on the Sustainable Development Goals (19 and 20 September 2023), in which a comprehensive review will be carried out of the state of the SDGs, responding to the impact of the multiple and interrelated crises facing the world, and will provide high-level political guidance on transformative and accelerated actions leading to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
