The massive fall of ash from the eruption of a volcano imposes an emergency in Kamchatka

The Russian authorities have declared a state of emergency in the areas affected by the massive fall of ash after the eruption of the volcano, Shiveluch, on the Kamchatka peninsula, which has caused an unprecedented situation in recent decades.

The administrative manager of the area, Oleg Bondarenko, has confirmed that the ash has wreaked havoc in several towns. With the state of emergency, the authorities have more power when it comes to restricting traffic or interrupting work activity.

The volcano erupted on April 11, giving rise to a column of smoke that rose up to 20 kilometers. Experts have ensured that the volume of ash is unprecedented in 60 years, with layers that exceed 20 centimeters.

With an altitude of more than 3,000 meters, Shiveluch is one of the largest volcanoes on this peninsula, famous precisely for its intense geological activity.
