Amazon entered 6,400 million in Spain in 2022, 6.6% more

It contributed to the state coffers with 931 million and maintains its commitment to reach 25,000 permanent employees in 2025

Amazon registered total gross income from its activities in Spain of 6,400 million euros in 2022, which represents an increase of 6.6% compared to the 6,000 million euros registered last year, according to the e-commerce giant.

Specifically, the ‘marketplace’ contributed 931 million euros to the State coffers last year, three times more than in 2021 where it contributed 292 million euros. Thus, it paid 317 million euros in direct taxes, which include payroll and social security taxes, as well as corporate taxes and taxes paid for the acquisition, construction of land, digital services and Import Duties.

In addition, the multinational also collected 614 million euros more in indirect taxes last year as a result of its activity in Spain, which includes VAT and taxes paid by its employees retained by the company.

The multinational, which does not offer its earnings in Spain, points out that operating profits remain “relatively low” due to price pressure in a very competitive market, intense capital investments and rising operating costs, including those derived from the increase in labor and inflation.

INVESTED 3,700 MILLION IN SPAIN

On the other hand, the investments of the electronic commerce giant in Spain reached 3,700 million euros, a similar figure registered in 2021, reinvesting more than half of the income it generated.

According to data from the independent economic consultancy Keystone Strategy, Amazon’s investments since its launch in Spain have contributed more than 11,000 million euros to GDP in Spain.

In this way, in 2021 the multinational continued to open new operations centers in Spain, which allows it to have around 40 facilities spread throughout the territory. Thus, it expands its logistics network after recently opening two new logistics centers in the provinces of Zaragoza and Girona, which will generate more than 2,500 permanent jobs in the next three years.

In 2022, Amazon Web Services (AWS) opened a new infrastructure region in Spain to drive the digital transformation of companies and organizations. This new AWS Europe region, located in Aragon, represents an investment of €2.5 billion and supports more than 1,300 full-time jobs over 10 years.

The electronic commerce giant recalled that since its arrival in 2011 it is one of the ten largest employers in the country’s private sector, after closing 2022 with a total of more than 22,000 permanent employees in Spain, 18.1% more, and maintaining its goal of raising this figure to 25,000 before the end of 2025.

In addition to Amazon’s direct employment, it is estimated that the company’s operations in 2021 generated more than 88,000 jobs, according to a study by the independent economic consultancy Keystone Strategy, of which 35,000 correspond to the people who manage the ‘online’ business of Amazon. the more than 13,000 national SMEs that sell in Amazon stores.

THE LARGEST CORPORATE BUYER OF RENEWABLE ENERGY IN SPAIN

On the other hand, Amazon, the first signatory and co-founder of The Climate Plegde, has committed to reaching 100% renewable energy in all its operations by 2025.

The American multinational is the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy in Spain, with 18 large-scale projects in the country
(15 solar plants and three wind farms) and 27 solar roofs on its buildings, for a combined capacity of more than 1.55 gigawatts (GW).

The company anticipates that when all these projects are operational, they will generate renewable energy equivalent to electricity consumption
of more than 850,000 Spanish households.

In its commitment to sustainability, the firm continues to transform the transport network for deliveries to customers, promoting the use of
alternative means of transport such as electric vans or cargo bikes, and continues to innovate and invest in technologies, processes and materials that have helped reduce the weight of packaging per shipment by 38% and avoid the use of more than 1.5 million tons of packaging material since 2015.
