The UN Secretary General, António Guterres, will lead an international meeting in Doha, the capital of Qatar, on May 1 and 2 on the current situation in Afghanistan, his spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, confirmed on Wednesday.
“The purpose is to revitalize the international commitment around common objectives towards a sustainable path with respect to the situation in Afghanistan,” Dujarric said at a press conference, adding that special envoys on Afghanistan from several countries will attend.
The announcement was announced the day before by the Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, Amina Mohammed, during a conference at Princeton University, after which the former United States representative for peace in Afghanistan Zalmi Khalilzad welcomed the meeting.
“Is it possible? I don’t know. (But) that discussion has to happen. The Taliban clearly want recognition, and that is the influence we have,” Mohammed said, thus urging to open the door to recognition, as reported by Tolo.
Faced with the possibility of recognition of the ‘de facto’ leaders of Afghanistan by the United Nations, Dujarric specified this Wednesday at a press conference that it is a decision that corresponds to each Member State and not to the UN Secretariat.
