The President of Algeria, Abdelmayid Tebune, signed a presidential decree on Wednesday to pardon more than 8,900 prisoners on the occasion of Eid al Fitr, the end of the month of Ramadan, according to a statement from the Presidency.
The pardon will be granted to 8,985 prisoners who have been deprived of liberty and sentenced to terms equal to or less than 12 months or who have that time to serve. In the case of people over 65 years of age, minors, pregnant women or mothers of children under three years of age, the period is extended to 18 months of sentence.
Excluded from the pardon are those inmates who have been convicted of terrorism, treason, espionage, murder, flight, creation of a criminal association, drug trafficking, as well as corruption offences, the newspaper ‘Tout Sur L’Algerie has reported. ‘.
