Japan will send military planes to Sudan to evacuate its citizens due to fighting between the Army and the RSF

19 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Government of Japan has announced this Wednesday that it will send military planes to Sudan to proceed with the evacuation of its citizens in the African country, after fighting broke out on Saturday between the Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) that have left more than 250 dead.

The spokesman for the Executive of Japan, Hirokazu Matsuno, has revealed that the Foreign Minister, Yoshimasa Hayasi, has called on the Minister of Defense, Yasukazu Hamada, to adopt the necessary measures to carry out a “rescue” mission, as reported the Japanese news agency Kiodo.

Likewise, he has said that the Japanese present in Sudan, including the diplomats from the Embassy in Khartoum, are facing a “serious situation” due to the shortage of food and water. Finally, he has asserted that for the moment there is no information on injuries or dead among the nearly 60 Japanese in Sudan.

The hostilities have continued for the fifth day during the day of this Wednesday, after the Army and the RSF have mutually accused each other of violating the ceasefire agreement reached on Tuesday, which came into force at 6:00 p.m. in a lull in fighting.

The fighting broke out on Saturday in the context of an increase in tensions over the reform of the security apparatus and the integration of the paramilitary force within the Armed Forces, a key part of an agreement signed in December to form a new civil government and reactivate the transition.

The talks process began with international mediation after the president of the Sovereign Transitional Council, Abdelfatá al Burhan, led a coup in October 2021 that overthrew the then unity prime minister, Abdalá Hamdok, appointed to the position following of contacts between civilians and the military after the April 2019 coup, which ended 30 years of Omar Hasan al Bashir’s regime.
