The event that sought to promote journalism and communication of science and technology, was held at the Antonio Varas headquarters of the Andrés Bello University, in Santiago, between April 3 and 5.
Claudia Fritis, Journalist University of Antofagasta.- The Coordinator of the C-TyS “Science, Technology and Society” Team of the Vice-Rector for Research, Innovation and Postgraduate Studies at the University of Antofagasta, Dr. Gladys Hayashida, participated this Tuesday, April 4, as a panelist in the first Symposium to Advance in Journalism and Communications of Science and Technology in Chile, SAPeCCT, Chile 2023.
The panel in which Dr. Hayashida was part received the name of “Training options in journalism and science communication in Chile.” On the occasion, the scarce offer of specializations in this area was addressed and what are the benefits of continuing studies in scientific communication, for the professional and for the development of science in Chile.
The space, which was moderated by the director of the north-central zone of ACHIPEC, Dr. Teresa Vernal, included the interventions of the Academic Coordinator of the Postgraduate in Science Communication of the University of Chile, Dr. Nélida Pohl; the Head of the Diploma in Diffusion and Communication of Sciences of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Claudia Montero; and the Communications Coordinator and Research Vice-Rector of the Andrés Bello University, Victoria Martínez.
Regarding her participation, Dr. Hayashida declared: “as the University of Antofagasta, we have created the second postgraduate degree in Science Communication at the national level and the first in the entire northern macro-zone. This specialization for professionals, not only in communications, but also in scientific and education areas, among others, is a great opportunity to acquire tools and knowledge to communicate, in an integral way, and it is a great contribution from the north, to advance the development of scientific communication. We could not be absent from this great event of learning and strengthening of collaboration networks”.
The initiative brought together participants from various regions of the country, including journalism students, communication and science professionals, and great exponents of scientific communication, nationally and internationally. SAPeCCT is a project of the Spark Grant Initiative (SGI), sponsored by the World Federation of Science Journalists (WFSJ), with the collaboration of the Chilean Association of Journalists and Professionals for Science Communication (ACHIPEC), Universidad Andrés Bello (UNAB) and other partners. Under the auspices of the WFSJ, the SGI funds projects that strengthen the field of science journalism at the local level and that benefit the global community.
