15 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –
More than 115,000 people have taken to the streets of Tel Aviv for another Saturday to protest against the judicial reform presented by the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to estimates by Israeli television Channel 12.
Tens of thousands more people have participated in the more than 150 calls in cities and towns across the country, The Times of Israel reports.
The conveners have assured that they will continue to take to the streets every Saturday despite Netanyahu’s announcement, who two weeks ago agreed to paralyze the judicial reform process to give room for dialogue.
“There are 115,000 protesters in the center of Tel Aviv and tens of thousands more in other parts of Israel who testify to our resistance and our confidence in democracy,” said the spokesman for the Umbrella Movement, Josh Drill.
“Netanyahu’s attempt to numb the national protests will not work. We are going to continue protesting by hundreds of thousands until the judicial coup is completely shelved,” he stressed.
For yet another week, the largest concentration has been in Tel Aviv, where a group of protesters has blocked the Ayalon highway in what is an initiative repeated practically every Saturday.
The agents have used water cannons and cavalry to disperse the demonstrators concentrated on the highway. Seven of them have been arrested for “disturbing public order”.
The judicial reform has already been approved in the first reading in the Knesset or Israeli Parliament despite the opposition of the protesters. They denounce that the Government would assume absolute control over the Judiciary, which would also be tied hand and foot to question the laws approved in the Knesset.
