15 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The Sudanese Army has accused the paramilitary Rapid Action Forces (RSF) this Saturday of an act of “treason” in the first confirmation, by the military leadership that leads the country, of the clashes that broke out this morning in the capital, Khartoum, and around a military base in the city of Meroe, 200 kilometers to the north.
“Following their paths of disloyalty and treason, the Rapid Action Forces have tried to attack our forces in the Sports City district,” the military confirmed in a statement collected by the Sudan Ajbar news portal.
“Our forces have clashed against the paramilitaries,” added the office of the Armed Forces Spokesperson in the statement.
Military sources on condition of anonymity have confirmed to the pan-Arab Al Jazeera chain that the RSF have begun their attacks on the capital with an assault against the General Command of the Army that was reportedly repelled.
Both the Army and the RSF have also confirmed that the clashes have spread to the Khartoum international airport. The paramilitaries have assured that the installation is under their control, but the Army has denied this information and assures that the fighting continues.
In the casualty chapter, medical sources have already confirmed to Al Jazeera at least one dead civilian and several dead and wounded soldiers who have been taken to the Bashaer hospital while the clashes are also spreading through the main streets of the city.
