The UN travels to Mozambique to assess how the conflict affects children

15 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The UN Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, Virginia Gamba, has visited Mozambique to discuss how the crisis situation in the Cabo Delgado province is affecting her childhood.

Through a statement after her visit, the special representative thanked “the constructive meetings with the Government and its willingness to strengthen the protection of children affected by conflicts, as well as to strengthen the prevention of serious violations against them.”

Among the preventive measures discussed with the country’s authorities would be the adoption of a handover protocol for children associated with armed groups found during operations.

They have also celebrated the “important steps” taken by the Government in the area of child protection, highlighting the training of bodies of the Mozambique Armed Forces to establish child protection focal points.

The conflict in the country is focused on the province of Cabo Delgado, scene since October 2017 of attacks carried out by Islamist militants known as Al Shabaab, unrelated to the group of the same name that operates in Somalia and maintains ties with Al Qaeda.
