The Electoral Public Ministry demands the political disqualification of Bolsonaro

First modification:

The process is woven on the basis of the attacks that the president made on several occasions against the Brazilian electoral system. This would not be the only case in which the far-right leader is involved. Bolsonaro has more than a dozen investigations against him distributed between the common courts and the Supreme Court.

Local media, such as the newspaper ‘O Globo’, they echoed of the intention of the Brazilian Electoral Prosecutor to politically disqualify the former Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, for eight years. The root cause of the measure would be the unfounded attacks it launched against the local voting system.

If the process progresses, which is carried out under the classification of summary secrecy, it would make it impossible for the former president to appear in the next electoral contest.

According to the Public Ministry, Bolsonaro incurred in “abuse of political power”due to the suspicions that he wove around electronic ballot boxes, the suffrage system that has been used in Brazil since 1996. The signature of the deputy attorney general for elections, Paulo Gonet, supports this pronouncement, on which there is no further specification.

According to ‘O Globo’, the electoral law stipulates that “the abuse of political power occurs in situations in which the defendant takes advantage of his position and uses public property to act in order to influence the voter.”

The initiative began with a complaint from the Democratic Labor Party. This was presented after the then head of state held a meeting at the official residence with some 40 ambassadors on July 18.

At that time, Bolsonaro already expressed his distrust of the electoral system. He argued that in the 2014 elections – when the leftist Dilma Roussef was re-elected – there were irregularities. In addition, he assured that the ones he won in the second round, against Fernando Haddad, “were not totally transparent.”

In that meeting, he also insinuated that some members of the Supreme Court and the Electoral Justice had “clear links” with “the left”, for which reason he accused them of benefiting the current president Luiz Inácio ‘Lula’ da Silva in some of their decisions.

The newspaper states that if this process advances, it would take place “between the end of April and the beginning of May.”

Other open cases against Bolsonaro

After his return from the United States —where he stayed for about three months— Bolsonaro’s arrival in his country to lead the political opposition against ‘Lula’ has not been a smooth process. Common justice and the Supreme Court have him in their sights.

More than a dozen cases They are linked to the former president, as reported by ‘O’Globo’. For his part, the Reuters news agency said that two high-level judicial sources and legal experts believe that Bolsonaro will lose at least one of those lawsuits, which could cut short his participation in the 2026 presidential campaign.

Among the open processes is that of his alleged relationship with the thousands of people who attacked the three powers of the State in Brasilia. The attackers had the express objective of removing ‘Lula’ from power, also inciting the armed forces to achieve it. Bolsonaro is presumed to have masterminded the assaults.

Recently, the far-right leader had to testify before the Federal Police, to account for some jewelry that he received as a gift from the Saudi authorities and that he did not deliver at the end of his term, as stipulated by Brazilian law.

In addition, two sets of these gifts are valued at $75,000 and $100,000. Another group was confiscated at a national airport, in the backpack of a Bolsonaro adviser. This could cost about 3.2 million dollars.
