Seagate today introduced its new Conventional Magnetic Recording (CMR)-based hard drives -thus avoiding the problems of SMR technology- under the nomenclature Seagate IronWolf Prowith capacities up to 22TB that will increase the storage density of any systemregardless of the number of units that can be mounted inside.
These new CMR hard drives offer capacity, reliability and high performance, which is important in drives specifically designed for NAS, although its general focus is for multi-user workloads and enterprise RAID solutions.
According to Seagate, these drives are designed with a workload target of 550TB per year, with sequential speeds up to 285MB/s which, in the future, could rival the sequential speeds of SATA SSDs if this technology is combined with Seagate’s multi-actuator system in the Exos range, which allows you to effectively double the transfer speed of the disk.
This is certainly a substantial improvement over Seagate drives, but all this comes at a price.as this unit will have a recommended retail price of $599, in which we find three years of data recovery services included.
