As previously mentioned, Final Fantasy XVI is an action RPG that leaves behind all the elements that have accompanied the franchise until now, including turn-based combat. The game’s story takes us to the kingdom of Valisthea and its main character is Clive Rosefield, who the players will follow through three different periods of his life: teenager, twenty-something and thirty-something. The campaign begins with Clive in his twenties, but there are flashbacks playable to be able to experience the crucial events of the past and present.
Navigation in Final Fantasy XVI is done on a world map where locations are added and updated with the player’s progress in the main story, which will last around 35 hours.
Final Fantasy XVI’s combat system is that of a “pure” action RPG and all battles occur in real time. Clive will learn abilities from the eikon he encounters and they all have special characteristics depending on where they come from. Skill points earned from defeating enemies allow you to unlock more skills or upgrade existing ones. In case you are not particularly skilled in combat, the game offers a series of aids in the form of accessories. For example, there is a slow ring, an auto attack ring as well as an accessory that automates evasion.
Throughout his journey, Clive will meet different characters and some of them will join his adventure to fight alongside him. Players will only have to control Clive. The one who will always accompany our hero is Torgal, a dog who will assist him in combat and who can be given direct orders. The dog accepts sweets.
One of the novelties shown in the gameplay is La guarida de Cid, which serves as the base camp. There Clive will be able to buy weapons and armor, craft items, access training modes and start side quests as well as group hunts. The final part of the Final Fantasy XVI State of Play has been dedicated to eikon versus eikon battles. In these real-time fights, players will control an eikon in matches that will vary depending on the eikon that are known.
Final Fantasy XVI will be available on June 22 for PS5 and Naoki Yoshida, producer of the game, assures that there are still “many more things” to tell, including battle content, side missions, the post-campaign and more. Square Enix will talk about it “shortly”.
