Poland says South Korea will only sell arms to Ukraine "with direct intervention" from the US

13 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Prime Minister of Poland, Mateusz Morawiecki, has affirmed this Thursday that South Korea will only sell weapons to Ukraine if there is a “direct intervention” by the President of the United States, Joe Biden, which leads to an agreement for the provision, especially, of projectiles.

Morawiecki, who is visiting Washington this week to meet with senior government officials and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), has pointed out in an interview with ‘The New York Times’ that making use of South Korean weapons is “vital so Ukraine can get all the ammunition it needs.”

In this sense, it has warned that the Russian Army has a greater number of missiles and projectiles and, therefore, can make a greater number of launches per month. Thus, he has emphasized that the South Korean Armed Forces have a large arsenal and could contribute.

However, he has maintained that in order to reach an agreement, greater “involvement on the part of Biden” is necessary, which allows Seoul to guarantee that Washington will offer its support at all times and in the event of a possible aggression by Russia or China. “We have talked to South Korea about this, about handing over weapons and ammunition, but they don’t think it will be possible without the intervention of the United States because they are afraid of the reaction of Beijing and Moscow,” he asserted.

He has also stressed that Poland will not hand over South Korean weapons without Seoul’s approval. “I want Ukraine to win this war, of course, God forbid. If Ukraine is conquered, then we would be talking about a totally different world. If Russia wins, why wouldn’t China do the same with Russian support? It is a key moment for history,” he warned.

His words come after the alleged leak of documents from the Pentagon and US Intelligence came to light, which suggested that Poland would be playing a fundamental role in transferring South Korean weapons to Ukraine.
