In Russia, the Shiveluch volcano erupted on April 11, spewing a cloud of ash on the Kamchatka peninsula in the Far East region, posing a risk to aircraft, local volcanological authorities said.
The Kamchatka Volcano Eruption Response Team (KVERT), which monitors eruptions in the region, issued an aviation code red due to ash drifting hundreds of kilometers north and southwest of Shiveluch.
“The eruption of the volcano continues. At any time, ash explosions up to 15 km high could occur. The ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft,” KVERT warned.
A video of the eruption posted on Telegram by the head of the Ust-Kamchatsk commune, Oleg Bondarenko, showed a wall of gray ash stretching from one end of the horizon to the other.
The Shiveluch volcano, one of the largest volcanoes in Kamchatka, is between 60,000 and 70,000 years old, according to KVERT.
The Kamchatka Peninsula is sparsely populated.
According to the Smithsonian Institution’s Global Volcanism Program, about 12,000 people live within a 100 km radius around the Shiveluch volcano.
