The government coalition of Kenya appoints its delegation for negotiations with the opposition

11 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Kenyan government coalition has revealed on Tuesday the composition of the pro-government delegation that will participate in negotiations with the opposition to try to solve the political crisis, days after the opposition did the same.

The Kenya Kwanza Alliance (Kenya First) has indicated that the delegation will be made up of seven parliamentarians after a meeting led by Kenyan President William Ruto, according to the Kenyan newspaper ‘The Standard’.

The names of the members of both delegations will be presented this Tuesday before Parliament, which will debate their ratification with a view to the formation of an ‘ad hoc’ committee to address the talks process.

The Kenyan opposition leader, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, presented a series of demands to Ruto last week in order to start the contacts and threatened to call demonstrations again if he appreciated a “lack of seriousness” on the part of the authorities.

Ruto opened the door to negotiate with the opposition with the electoral commission, after Odinga called off the mobilizations to start contacts after a series of mobilizations to protest the high cost of living and against the Government.

The former prime minister considers the Kenyan president illegitimate arguing that the elections held in August 2022, which he ran with the support of the outgoing president, Uhuru Kenyatta, were marked by fraud. The tension has been increasing to the point that the opposition leader recently denounced an alleged assassination attempt.
