The opposition coalition calls for unity for a “road map” with which to end the crisis in Tunisia

The leader of the Tunisian opposition coalition National Salvation Front, Neyib Chebi, has called for unity between the opposition parties to agree on a “road map” to get the country out of the political crisis in which it was plunged in July 2021, when the president, Kais Saied, arrogated all powers by dissolving the Government and suspending Parliament, later dissolved.

Chebi has opted to “promote a dialogue” in which the General Union of Tunisian Workers (UGTT) – the main union of the African country -, the Tunisian League for Human Rights, the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights participate and the Bar Association.

Thus, he has stressed that it is necessary to “agree on a ‘road map’ that can mobilize hundreds of thousands of Tunisians” and has argued that “national unity is the only way out of the economic crisis.”

Chebi has also denounced that Saied “has closed all the ways for Tunisia to obtain foreign resources” and has warned that “the country will be unable to pay its debts in the coming years”, as reported by the Tunisian state news agency, TAP. .

For his part, Riad Chaibi, a member of the National Salvation Front and a senior official of the Islamist Ennahda party, has requested the release of the opponents detained in recent months for their alleged role in a “plot against the State.”

Saied has been heavily criticized by the opposition for measures taken since July 2021, including a constitutional referendum and parliamentary elections marked by record-low turnout.

The security forces have also arrested prominent opponents, activists and journalists in recent weeks for an alleged “plot against state security”, which has unleashed a wave of criticism against the authorities.
