An Iranian delegation will visit Saudi Arabia next week to prepare for the reopening of the Embassy

9 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

An Iranian technical delegation will visit Saudi Arabia next week to prepare for the reopening of the Iranian embassy in Riyadh, the semi-official Iranian news agency ISNA reported on Sunday.

This announcement takes place after the arrival this past Saturday of the Saudi delegation to Tehran to finalize the agreement reached in Beijing for the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Specifically, the objective is to reopen the embassies in Riyadh and Tehran and the Saudi consulate in Mashhad, explained the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement collected by the Al Arabiya chain.

Tehran and Riyadh severed diplomatic relations in 2016 following an attack on Saudi missions in Iran by protesters calling for a halt to the execution of Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr.

Likewise, both regional powers are indirectly involved through the war in Yemen, where Riyadh supports the Yemeni government while Tehran does the same with the Huthi insurgency.
