The president of Tunisia, Kais Saied, has affirmed this Thursday before the pressures of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for the granting of a loan, conditioned by the organism to that the country undertakes an economic reform, that “the Tunisian State is independent”. and that “he does not receive instructions from abroad”.
Saied, who has delivered a speech in the framework of the death anniversary of former president Habib Bourguiba, has assured that “he will not accept any dictates from abroad in his elections”, since this “has only brought misfortune and more impoverishment”.
The president has emphasized that Tunisia “is for Tunisians and not for sale.” Likewise, he has reiterated that the country has “many capacities” to solve the economic and social challenges it faces, according to the TAP news agency.
Saied thus stressed that the alternative to the IMF would be to have “own resources”, since Tunisia has “potential”. “We are not willing to give up even a grain of sand from our beloved homeland,” he reiterated, as Mosaique FM has reported.
Tunisia is negotiating with the international institution the granting of a new loan of 1,700 million euros to face a record public debt of 89 percent of GDP, amid strong daily protests against the appropriation of powers by the country’s president, Kais Saied, who in In July 2021, he arrogated the powers of Parliament in what his critics described as a self-coup.
