"I know I can count on you"

6 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The president of France, Emmanuel Macron, has urged his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, to take advantage of his influence over Russia and mediate between Moscow and Kiev so that the Russians “come to their senses” and thus be able to move towards a solution to a war that It has been going on for more than thirteen months.

“I know I can count on you so that Russia comes to its senses and everyone sits down at the negotiating table,” Macron said during a meeting with Xi in the Chinese capital, Beijing, according to the French newspaper ‘Le Parisien’.

For his part, Xi has remarked that China already presented a peace plan at the end of February –rejected by a large part of the international community as it is considered closer to Russia’s positions– and has urged Russia and Ukraine to resume negotiations. .

On this point, the Chinese president has stressed the need to respect the basic principles of the United Nations and has defended that Beijing’s position is to act with restraint and avoid by all means a possible escalation or lack of control of hostilities.

According to the Chinese president, both parties to the conflict must also focus on preventing attacks against civilians and infrastructure, while a firm commitment is essential not to use nuclear weapons, according to the German agency DPA.

Finally, Macron has advocated “building a sustainable Europe” at the geopolitical level, although he has lamented that this “is not possible if a country is occupied.” “We will have to engage in a demanding discussion with Russia so that it respects its principles,” he added.

“We not only want an end to the conflict, but respect for the entire Ukrainian territory,” Macron has settled, who has also denounced that the future deployment of Russian nuclear weapons in Belarus “breach the commitments made with respect to China” and has encouraged Beijing to work together with Paris to “preserve an international order capable of meeting the challenges of these times.”

President Macron is on an official visit to Beijing, where he has already met with Xi and now plans a trilateral meeting with the Chinese president and the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, who is also in the Chinese capital. .
