Sony patent proposes a gel DualSense that would change temperature

Over the decades, the video game industry has seen technologies come and go applied to products that seek to take the gaming experience beyond the relationship between a controller and a screen. The idea that video games can feel in different ways still holds true, albeit with unsuccessful results outside of motion controls and vibration motors. This generation, Sony bet on the DualSense and the future could hold something interesting.

A DualSense that cooled and heated? It is possible according to Sony

A report of puter shared details about a new Sony patent that proposes a different PlayStation controller than what we know so far. The patent, registered in 2020 and published a few days ago, refers to the integration in the control of pieces made with elastic material (basically a gel) that would include sensors which are designed for a new form of interaction between the user and what happens in the videogame. In this regard, the official description states: “a controller includes a sensor that uses a deformable elastic member that detects user contact or deforming action and emits an electrical signal based on the detected contact or action in question.”

Sony proposes the use of gel pieces in a controller to provide a new gaming experience

Sony’s idea is to break with the way of gaming that involves a controller made of rigid materials and mechanical components, as well as signifying a step forward in DualSense haptic technology. In this case, the deformable elastic material would be related to what happens in the game through feedback. An example of this is the possibility that this material changes temperature, let’s say cold or hot, depending on what is experienced in a video game.

Likewise, the use of elastic materials would allow, according to Sony, an unprecedented sensory experience since the hands would perceive something like rain. On the other hand, the idea of the Japanese company is that the gaming experience is enriched through the intervention of an AI.

What do you think of this proposal from Sony for a hypothetical new generation DualSense?
