Kenyan opposition leader threatens new demonstrations if Ruto does not show "seriousness" in negotiations

5 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga has presented a series of demands to President William Ruto ahead of the start of talks to address the political crisis and has threatened to call demonstrations again if his demands are not met.

“We assure our people and the Kenyans that our eyes are fixed on the target and we reiterate that we will return as soon as there are signs of lack of seriousness on the part of the other party,” he said, according to the Kenyan newspaper ‘The Star’.

Thus, he has demanded that Ruto adopt measures to face the rise in the standard of living and has stressed that it is something “urgent” and that “it cannot wait”. “We know that our people are suffering,” she said.

For this reason, the former prime minister has stressed that his party will not rest until this matter is resolved and has also demanded an audit of the servers used during the last elections, after denouncing fraud and refusing to recognize Ruto’s victory.

Odinga has also requested a restructuring of the electoral commission in view of the upcoming elections and has stressed that it is necessary to maintain respect for the multi-party system, although he has reiterated that the most urgent thing is to address the increase in the prices of basic products.

Ruto opened the door on Monday to negotiate with the opposition with the electoral commission, after Odinga called off the mobilizations to initiate contacts with the Kenyan president.

Odinga has called demonstrations every Monday and Thursday to protest the high cost of living and against the government, which he considers illegitimate for considering the August elections fraudulent. The tension has been increasing to the point that the opposition leader recently denounced an alleged assassination attempt.
