Five people arrested on suspicion of murdering a woman in India as a "human sacrifice" in a Hindu temple

5 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Indian authorities have announced the arrest of five people suspected of murdering a woman in 2019 as part of a “human sacrifice” at a Hindu temple in the northeastern state of Assam.

The Guwahati Police Commissioner, Diganta Bora, has indicated that the decapitated body of the 64-year-old woman was found on June 19, 2019 covered with a sheet on a staircase at the Kamajia temple. The victim had gone to the temple to participate in an annual ceremony and she was reported missing.

The main suspect has been identified as Pradip Zazak, an official from the province of Uttar Pradesh who would have planned the murder as an “offering” to the goddess Kamajia, as reported by the newspaper ‘The Indian Express’.

The arrests took place between the end of March and the beginning of April, although the security forces are still looking for seven other suspects who are still on the run.

Ritual killings are most often carried out in remote parts of India, although two people were arrested last year in the capital New Delhi for allegedly murdering a child to ask Shiva for wealth.
