In May 2022, we gave you our first impressions of MultiVersus, a title that promised to be free, highly competitive, receive tons of characters and a lot of content on a constant basis. Unfortunately, it fell straight into oblivion in less than a year and they had to take emergency actions failing those who trusted the game. In some way, MultiVersus he spat at his fans.
A high risk decision
MultiVersus will be shutting down their servers until further notice and there will be no refunds for players who spent real money on the game. This is how it describes it in its terms and conditions. A few days ago, the director of Player First Games confirmed that the beta stage of MultiVersus would end on June 25 and at the same time, the game servers will remain closed until 2024. The promise is that next year, MultiVersus will have an official release with all the content that didn’t make it to this version and more. In the meantime, it has been confirmed that local modes will be available after the shutdown, but everything else will stay as is.
These statements make us feel disappointed, after trusting this platform fighting game that aspired to be a Smash killer. A pushing game that lined the pockets of its creators by charging for content in an unfinished game.

Three packages known as the Founder’s Pack were sold with a value of $40, $60 and $100 USD. The most expensive version included 30 tokens to instantly unlock characters, 3 battle passes, 2,500 gleamium (in-game currency) and a few extras. This is worrying since MultiVersus only has 22 characters available until Season 2. The Player First Games team ensures that all your purchases will be able to be used in the next year in the new version. In short, they ask us to trust once again in a game that may even be at risk of being cancelled.
On the other hand, we must recognize that MultiVersus he had good ideas. It was designed to be played in pairs, archetypes, perks and other features were implemented that set it apart from the rest. These successes excited the players and on Steam it reached the top 10 most played on the day of launch and close to 20 million players on all platforms. So what went wrong? Let’s go by parts.
we were excited
MultiVersus it was kept alive through speculation. This happened because of the large number of Warner Bros. licenses, they had a world of possibilities in their hands. Theories about the characters that could come to the game were commonplace. Even before its official announcement, there were already discussions in forums where there was talk of alleged leaks that mention characters like Gandalf, Harry Potter, Godzilla, Mad Max, Scorpion and Beetlejuice. Imagination was the limit and the arrival of LeBron James opened up the possibility of seeing original characters. The potential for MultiVersus to create a dream crossover was enormous. For a moment, we thought that the number of characters would gradually grow to rival the 80+ characters available in Super Smash Bros. Ultimatebut this did not happen.
There is talent, we just need to support it
MultiVersus had a lot of direct support from Warner Bros. Games, even hosting a tag team tournament as part of EVO 2022. This tournament surprised attendees as it was not part of the official EVO selection, but had a prize pool of over 100 thousand dollars in cash. Many of us thought that this support would be constant, by promoting the competitive part, but it was never consolidated as one of the main games.
The game was designed to strategize by using the abilities of 2 characters and the use of perks as a surprise element. The idea was good and it was fun to form teams to compete but something was missing. The lack of new characters and novelties in the game gradually made players who wanted to compete lose interest. In addition, the lack of incentives caused MultiVersus was displaced from tournaments by other games. This is ironic considering that, even though it was a beta version, MultiVersus managed to position itself as the fighting game of the year at the Game Awards 2022.
mediocre season 2
Season 1 of MultiVersus it was the equivalent of an unofficial release, many of us believed that this was the equivalent of its official release. In this period Gizmo, Morty, Black Adam, Rick and Stripe joined. Charismatic characters that changed the game strategy by implementing new techniques and strategies. In addition to this, new modes were added that were sorely needed such as ranked matches and an arcade mode.
As if that were not enough, the battle pass offered interesting skins and cosmetics. Despite having a cost, the Premium Battle Pass tried to justify its price with good incentives. It seemed that this would be a constant but everything would fall apart later.
After maintaining a good rhythm and trying to spoil his most loyal players, the natural path of MultiVersus meet a season 2 with the same quality. This didn’t happen, instead we had a weak launch with only one character. Marvin the Martian was the character who was late to the party. The Battle Pass also had little incentive to continue playing and take advantage of the Premium Pass. Season 2 was the best indicator of how MultiVersus he was dying and no one cared. The game was at its worst.
The decadence
In mid-February, the success of MultiVersus he plummeted. According to Steam DB reports, of the more than 153,000 active players reached at its peak, an average of 710 players a day continue to play. A collapse that represents a fall of 99% and is a reflection of the lack of interest in MultiVersus. These red numbers have not changed since then and will likely remain so until the close of the open beta.
The emotion of facing characters from DC Comics, Adventure Time, looney tunes and game of Thrones disappeared and it is likely that in a few months MultiVersus I was buried in oblivion. The decision to slam the game puts the future of the game at risk to the point of being canceled if everything goes wrong.
This is insanely disappointing news please tell us we don’t have to wait that long for more content PLEASE tell us something is coming before then the silence is killing the community

It’s hard to believe after so many disappointments and leaves the players who trusted him without guarantees. MultiVersus From the beginning. Despite this, it is assured that very popular characters could be added to the final version in 2024. Are you disappointed with the end of the open beta of MultiVersus?
