One dead and 30 injured when a train derailed near The Hague (Netherlands)

At least one person has died and 30 have been injuredmany of them seriously, after a passenger train carrying about 50 people had derailed this tuesday at dawn in Netherlands colliding with construction equipment on the road, Dutch emergency services have said.

Rescue teams were seen transporting the wounded in the dark before dawn at the scene of the accident in Voorschoten, a town near The Hague. The accident occurred around half past two in the morningas reported by the emergency services.

A spokesman for the fire department told Dutch radio that 19 people were taken to hospital. Others were being treated at the scene, emergency services said. The causes of the accident have not yet been communicated and there are conflicting reports about it, according to Reuters.

The front car of the night train from Leiden to The Hague derailed and crashed into a field after the accident, the ANP news agency said. The second wagon was on its side and there was a fire in the rear wagonbut then died out, he said.

Previous reports had said that the passenger train had collided with a freight train. Dutch Railways (NS) spokesman Erik Kroeze said that a freight train was involved in the accidentbut could not give details.

Dutch Railways said in a tweet that the train travel between Leiden and some areas of The Hague scheduled for today have been canceled due to the accident.
