5.3 magnitude earthquake shakes Oaxaca, in southwestern Mexico

( Spanish) –– A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck off the coast of the state of Oaxaca, in southwestern Mexico, The United States Geological Survey reported Monday. (USGS).

The seismic focus was located 42.5 kilometers deep, and the epicenter was located 8.3 kilometers southeast of San Jerónimo Coatlán, in Oaxaca, and 35.2 kilometers from Miahuatlán de Porfirio Díaz, in the same state.

For its part, the National Seismological Service of Mexico reported a magnitude of 5.5, located 17 kilometers from Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca.

The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, said on Twitter that the earthquake “apparently and fortunately did not cause major damage.” However, he added that “Civil Protection, the National Defense and Navy secretariats and the state government are acting anyway.”
