Two students kidnapped in an attack on a university in northern Nigeria

3 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

At least two female students were kidnapped on Sunday in an attack by unidentified gunmen on a university in the northern Nigerian state of Zamfara, authorities have confirmed.

Zamfara Police spokesman Mohammed Shehu has indicated that “armed bandits” broke into the village of Sabon Gida and broke into a facility used as a dormitory by students of the Federal University of Gusau.

Thus, he stressed that the attackers “locked up the two guards and stole their wives”, after which “they kidnapped two students from the University’s Department of Microbiology”, as reported by the Nigerian newspaper ‘The Premium Times’ .

Attacks in Nigeria, previously focused on the northeastern part of the country — where Boko Haram and its splinter, Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA) operate — have spread in recent years to other parts of the north and northwest, making alarm bells are going off due to the possible expansion of these terrorist and criminal networks, many of which live off the kidnapping of students.

These groups of “bandits”, as they are usually referred to by the Nigerian government, are responsible for dozens of kidnappings and attacks in recent months, especially against educational centers and transport, with the aim of obtaining ransom payments.
