Rwandan President Paul Kagame was re-elected this weekend with 99.8 percent of the vote as the leader of his party, the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), for the next five years.

Kagame, who has been in power for 23 years, was only facing the country’s ambassador to Indonesia, Abdul Karim Harerimana, who has only obtained three votes compared to the 2,099 ballots for the current president.

Harerimana announced his own candidacy, claiming that he had spent enough time with Kagame in the presidency of the African country, as reported by the Rwandan newspaper ‘New Times’.

In these elections, the party has also elected Consolee Uwimana, the first woman vice president of the formation, with 1,945 votes. She is she replaces Christophe Bazivamo, who has been in office since 2002. In addition, the Rwandan ambassador to Angola, Wellars Gasamagera, has been appointed as the new Secretary General, with 1,899 ballots, and will replace Francois Ngarambe in office.
