OpenAI released this new version on March 14, 2023 with enhanced security features. The power of this AI tool has opened up a new panorama of opportunities for the Armed Forces.

Preserving the institutional memory of tactics and operations is a difficult task for militaries in today’s data-inundated environment. Frequent transfers and retirements of key military personnel make continuity difficult, so Decision Support Systems (DSS) are sorely needed for quality and consistent decision-making. The concept on which ChatGPT has evolved has given the Armed Forces the opportunity to explore military applications using ChatGPT.

Following the question “How to improve Indian military forces?”, below are the suggestions received from ChatGPT.

“The improvement of the Indian military forces requires a comprehensive and systematic approach, encompassing various aspects of military strategy, planning, organization, training and technology. Here are some steps that could be taken:

How did OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, manage to identify and get the source data to arrive at the suggestions above? If ChatGPT’s answer is close to reality, can we take advantage of this tool for our military operations and tactics?

When we launch queries about military operations and tactics, ChatGPT gives us an answer to keep the peace and advises us to refrain from war. ChatGPT has not been designed to offer military specific solutions.

ChatGPT is an expert system tool with a language generation model that includes Natural Language Processing (NLP), text generation, and language translation. Being multi-model, it can process and integrate inputs in the form of text, images and sounds. ChatGPT’s suggestions can be further debugged and refined to arrive at near-perfect solutions. OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT-4, offers an API (Application Programming Interface) that allows developers to access and use ChatGPT features for a fee. In addition, OpenAI has released other AI-related tools and technologies as open source software.

Any autonomous system with an AI element can be shortlisted for the ChatGPT tests. In conclusion, ChatGPT or a similar tool has the potential to improve and improvise various military cognitive applications and tactical solutions. This limitation will remain as many of the inputs required for military operations and tactical solutions are sensitive and dynamic. The military DSS is designed specifically for applications and the quality of the solution offered is close to optimal. It is necessary to work with OpenAI to adapt the current ChatGPT and make it suitable for military use.

Since ChatGPT does not have the means to verify the accuracy of source data available in the public domain specific to military applications, if ChatGPT has referred to garbage as the basic source of information, the result will be garbage as well. ChatGPT needs to be customized to suit the specific requirements of military applications by providing authentic source data. We can also explore the option of taking the result obtained by ChatGPT as one of the main inputs to the existing military DSS, and then providing supplementary information to generate near-optimal solutions from the military DSS. OpenAI will need to determine to what extent we can integrate with ChatGPT.

Therefore, it may not be suitable for military applications in its current form. The data sources needed for military operations and tactics are dynamic and real-time. The potential of ChatGPT has not yet been verified by any body for military applications. Many of the military solutions go beyond text and getting images and drawings as output from ChatGPT is quite a challenge. For now, ChatGPT can only be used as a data browser. To what extent we can adapt this application to the needs of the military is something we need to discuss with the creator, OpenAI.

Information and data security is one of the main challenges of military applications, since the source data is sensitive by nature. Confidential information must not fall into the wrong hands. Many of the military applications are in real time, so you have to check if ChatGPT can process large volumes of data in real time and provide responses quickly. In military applications, reliability is paramount. ChatGPT must be tested and validated to ensure its reliability under all conditions. The context and nuances of military jargon regarding each nation differ. Specialized training and adjustment of the linguistic model are mandatory to overcome these situations.

Decision support systems are unavoidable for military commanders at different levels, since the volume of data that is processed is enormous. It won’t be long before our infantrymen start using these systems in frontline operations to complement existing standard operating procedures (SOPs). Developing military-specific and foolproof online tools with ChatGPT would certainly be of great help to our evolving Armed Forces. Adaptation to local languages ​​and generation of audio and video format solutions to effectively meet the specific needs of the military may also be considered.
