Taiwan and Guatemala sign cooperation agreement

During her visit to Guatemala, Tsai Ing-wen, president of Taiwan, announced the signing of a basic cooperation agreement between the two governments, which she assures will allow greater diversification and innovation for technical cooperation between both nations.

The president arrived in the Central American country on Friday and will remain here over the weekend as a sign of the alliance that exists between Guatemala and Taiwan.

President Alejandro Giammattei described the visit as historic and assured that this sends a message of unity, solidarity and hope in these complex moments at the international level.

“The friendship between Guatemala and China Taiwan is unbreakable,” said the president, emphasizing that this visit reaffirms the support and recognition of Taiwan as “the only and true China,” with which democratic values, mutual respect, and historical ties are shared. of brotherhood.

For her part, Tsai Ing-wen, who is the first female president of Taiwan and has served in that position since 2016, thanked Guatemala for its support in the face of the differences with the People’s Republic of China. “Last year when we had to experience China’s military maneuvers, Guatemala immediately came out to defend justice for Taiwan; in all international instances, President Giammattei used different ways in support of Taiwan’s international participation,” she said.

Both leaders referred to the cooperation that Guatemala receives from Taiwan, focused on the environment, health, transportation, energy, water, education, and agriculture, highlighting the recent construction of a hospital in the department of Chimaltenango and the support provided during the coronavirus pandemic. COVID-19.

With the presence of the Taiwanese delegation and the Guatemalan government cabinet, the speech of the leaders took place in the Patio de la Vida, in the National Palace of Culture, where Tsai Ing-wen also received honors from members of the Guatemalan Army and officials.

The president assured that the alliance between her country and Guatemala will guarantee increased resilience, allowing us to solve all kinds of future challenges together.
