An important event in the country’s history, “the Shimabara Rebellion”, took place in Shimabara. It was an armed uprising of Japanese peasants, specifically Catholic Christians, in the Edo period, during the persecution of Christians called Kirishitan.

This was one of the few major conflicts during the relatively peaceful Tokugawa shogunate.
