March 31 (EUROPA PRESS) –
At least eleven people have died and five have been injured this Friday by a stampede during the distribution of food among the families of employees of a private company in an industrial area of Karachi, the most populous city in Pakistan.
A police forensic doctor, Summaiya Syed, has confirmed that among the dead are eight women, most of them middle-aged, and three children, whose bodies have been transferred to two nearby hospitals, as reported by the newspaper ‘Dawn’ .
More than 400 people have gathered in the oldest and largest industrial area of the city, where the FK Dyeing company was distributing food (Zakat al Fitr or alms) for the families’ employees for the month of Ramadan.
Because there was no security device to deal with the crowd — the capacity was exceeded — and the activity was not registered either, at least seven people have been arrested on charges related to negligence.
The collapse of the Pakistani rupee, which is at record lows, and the rise in the prices of fuels and basic products, driven by the war in Ukraine, have caused a serious economic crisis in Pakistan.
