ECLAC presented the methodology and experience of digital technologies in agricultural extension in Risaralda to promote their use in the department of Huila in Colombia

This Thursday, March 23, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) organized a workshop to share the methodology for applying digital technologies in the development of agricultural extension actions.

The meeting had a strong practical orientation and was based on the concrete experience developed in Colombia (especially in the Department of Risaralda) and in other Latin American countries, such as Costa Rica, Chile and Uruguay.

The meeting was attended by Luis Álvaro Figueroa, specialized professional in support of the Departmental Plan for Agricultural Extension of Huila, Jair Ojeda and Jaime Cortés, ECLAC consultants in charge of creating digital agricultural extension groups, Octavio Sotomayor senior adviser of the project.

As part of the work carried out by ECLAC in Risaralda, learning was presented on how to set up WhatsApp groups with producers, how to manage them and how to define an effective communication and content strategy.

At the meeting it was agreed that the EPSEAs will evaluate their interest in applying this methodology and, if applicable, define a work program oriented towards its application, under the leadership of the Ministry of Agriculture and Mining.

Meanwhile, from the Secretary of Agriculture and Mining of Huila, they stressed the importance of having a communication strategy that gives a broad and transversal perspective to the producers involved so that they recognize digital technologies as an opportunity in agricultural extension work.

This instance of work was carried out within the framework of the productive and territorial development project, part of the Facility for Development in Transition financed by the European Union.
