Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said on Wednesday that those responsible for the crime will be searched for and punished with transparency. fire at an immigration detention center in the north of the country for which at least 40 people died.
The incident at the facility, located in northern Ciudad Juárez, claimed the lives of migrants from Guatemala, Honduras, Venezuela, El Salvador, Colombia and Ecuador, countries to which López Obrador sent his condolences.
“There is no purpose of hiding the facts and protecting anyone,” the president said in his morning conference, at the same time that he asked the country’s prosecutor’s office to continue with the judicial investigation to clarify the facts and demand responsibilities.
“The event must be clarified and those responsible punished if the investigation reveals that there was fraud, that there was negligence,” he added.
The president also pointed out that possibly on Wednesday afternoon the Government will issue a report with the version it has collected about the deadly incident.
On the other hand, on Tuesday night, the Mexican Foreign Minister, Marcelo Ebrard, reported that the people “directly responsible” for the incident were already at the disposal of the Prosecutor’s Office, although he did not want to go into more details.
