March 28 () –

The United States has announced on Tuesday that it supports the creation of a special international court to try Russia for its “crimes of aggression” against Kiev and has suggested that the body may have its headquarters in a European country outside of Ukraine.

This was confirmed by the United States Ambassador for Global Criminal Justice, Beth Van Schaack, at a press conference, who specified that “there are convincing arguments” to support the initiative, which had previously been ruled out by Washington, according to the network.

“It could be located elsewhere in Europe, at least at the beginning, to reinforce the European orientation desired by Ukraine to give seriousness to the initiative and allow international participation, including through Eurojust,” he indicated.

Schaack added that this court could be based on the Ukrainian judicial system and also include “international elements” with the aim of achieving “comprehensive accountability for crimes committed in Ukraine.”

The International Criminal Court (ICC), based in The Hague, issued an arrest warrant on March 17 for Russian President Vladimir Putin, on suspicion of a war crime for the forced deportation of Ukrainian children from areas captured during Ukraine’s war on Russian territory.
