Human trafficking affects more than 27 million people in the world, according to data from the Department of Homeland Security, and destroys lives and families. Irma Reyes is the mother of a young victim of sex trafficking.

“It’s like a nightmare that I can’t wake up from. Everything hurts, but what comes to mind the most is that she was sold, like it was nothing.

In solidarity with the victims, the Archdiocese of New York launched an awareness campaign and installed the sculpture ‘Set the Oppressed Free’ by artist Timothy Schmalz, which depicts people subjected to human trafficking. They range from babies, brides, child soldiers, sex slaves and those who have their organs stolen.

“One of the epicenters of this tragedy is our Latin American countries, especially on the border, in places where vulnerable people are, because there are many kidnappings and trafficking of these that enter the United States through there,” says Father Enrique. Except, rector of St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

According to the archdiocese, some 6 million people visit the Cathedral each year, which makes it an important place to raise awareness. His employer, San Patricio, was also a victim of human trafficking. Breaking the silence and donating to institutions that fight against this scourge are ways to help.

The sculpture in the iconic St. Patrick’s Cathedral will be permanently open to the public.
