March 24 () –
The Constitutional Court of Armenia has finally ratified this Friday the Rome Statute, which established the International Criminal Court (ICC), and has thus officially recognized the jurisdiction of the court.
The Constitutional Court has endorsed that the Rome Statute “complies with the Armenian Constitution”, as confirmed by magistrate Arman Dilanyán, although it has qualified that some members of the court have expressed “extraordinary opinions” in this regard, as reported by the agency Armenpress News.
The Armenian government launched the process of ratifying the treaty in December 2022, when the Minister of Justice, Grigor Minasian, confirmed that he had taken the pertinent measures to achieve the final ratification of the statute, which did have the signature of Armenia since 1999.
The authorities then asked the Constitutional Court to verify if the statute complied with the current Magna Carta, adopted in 2015, since the ratification process had previously been stopped in 2004 when the court ruled that it did not match the 1995 Constitution.
