Borrell denounces the threats to the CFI from Medvedev, who considers an attack against The Hague "imaginable"

March 24 () –

The High Representative of the EU for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, has denounced the “illegal threats” to the International Criminal Court (ICC) and its headquarters made by the former Russian president and current vice president of the country’s Security Council, Dimitri Medvedev.

This weekend, Medvedev warned of “monstrous consequences” after the ICC’s decision to issue an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin, adding that he considered it “completely imaginable” that a precision missile attack would take place against his Headquarters in The Hague (Netherlands).

“Any retaliatory action against those involved in the work of the TPI is unacceptable,” Borrell published in a statement. “The European Union is committed to defending the Court against any foreign interference aimed at obstructing the course of justice and undermining the international criminal justice system.”

He has also regretted the criminal case launched by Russia against the chief prosecutor and the court judges who issued the arrest warrant: “In the fight against impunity, the ICC must be able to work independently and impartially.”
