The United States sanctioned three Paraguayan citizens on Thursday for their involvement in corruption activities, a statement from the State Department reported.
The sanctions prohibit Edgar Melgarejo, former director of the Civil Aviation Authority of Paraguay, from entering the United States; the current member of the Disciplinary Panel for Judges and Prosecutors Jorge Bogarin, and the court official Vicente Ferrera, as well as his closest relatives.
The note does not detail the actions committed by those sanctioned, but warns that “there are consequences for those who alter the progress of strengthening democracy with corrupt activities.”
“We continue to support Paraguayan citizens, organizations and public officials who are committed to generating hope and opportunities for a better future for their country,” the note warns.
The document concludes by saying that “the United States supports the people of Paraguay in their democratic efforts and the rule of law, and will continue to promote the accountability of those who abuse public power for personal enrichment.”
