Qatar charges former finance minister and former economic “czar”, Ali Sherif al-Emadi, with embezzlement

The former Finance Minister of Qatar, Ali Sherif al Emadi, in his day one of the main economic managers of the emirate, has finally been charged with embezzlement, almost two years after his arrest in May 2021, as he has reported. in a brief statement the official news agency QNA.

“Given that the evidence extracted from the records demonstrated the commission of the crimes of which he is accused, the Office of the Attorney General of the Nation has issued an act of imputation for bribery, appropriation of public property, money, abuse of office, abuse of power , damage to public money and money laundering,” according to the statement.

The indictment also affects an unspecified number of additional defendants, according to the note.

Al Emadi rose to prominence in the Gulf Arab emirate when the current emir, Tamim bin Hamad Al Zani, ascended to the throne after overseeing the transformation of the National Bank of Qatar into the region’s largest lender.

The defendant also served as president of the bank, as head of the board of Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund — with an amount of about 300,000 million euros — and as chairman of the executive board of Qatar Airways.
