The Turkish Vice President, Fuat Oktay, reported this Saturday the latest balance of fatalities from the earthquakes of February 6, in which at least 49,589 people died, of whom 6,807 were foreign citizens.
“Due to the earthquakes we have lost a total of 49,589 citizens, of whom 6,807 were foreigners,” Oktay explained during a ceremony at the headquarters of the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), according to the Turkish newspaper ‘ Hürriyet’.
In addition, there are three people who are still missing, according to Oktay, who has stressed that there are no longer power supply problems in the province of Adiyaman “except for a few subscribers.” Work is also continuing to restore water service.
As for the displaced, “currently our priority is that they have a roof, food and activities are promoted to revitalize the cities,” he pointed out. Thus, tents and containers set up as homes continue to be set up.
So far, 354 makeshift camps have been erected with 480,000 tents housing 1.9 million people. There are also 245 container areas with 108,155 planned containers, of which some 25,000 have already been installed, housing 96,444 people.
On the other hand, 2.5 million people receive three meals a day thanks to the response of the State and NGOs as the imminent start of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month, is being prepared, Oktay recalled.
