We are relatively used to seeing the durability data for the hard drives Backblaze uses in its data centers, but since 2018 it has also been possible to see the data from the SSD drives that are used there for different purposes. Now, we have a new report which allows us to see the reliability of these units in the long term.
The report has clear winners, and that is that, for example, the Dell DELLBOSS VD has had a total of zero failures through 231,597 “disk” dayswhich is simply the sum of the days that each unit has been running.
In addition, some 500GB Seagate drives also boast a zero drive failure ratebut these are units that have been used in very small quantities and do not constitute a representative sample.
The trend is the same model after model, with an AFR of just 0.89 percent proving that SSDs are more reliable than HDDs in the long run, since the AFR of hard drives in Backblaze is 1.39 percent.
