UdeC announces its line of work on gender equality on International Women’s Day

Within the framework of International Women’s Day, the University of Concepción invited the entire university community to be part of the institutional Commemoration Act that took place this Wednesday, March 8, at the Jaime Baeza Auditorium of the university.

The Rector of the University of Concepción, Dr. Carlos Saavedra Rubilar, highlighted that “this is a very symbolic milestone in our University, because it recognizes and reflects the progress that has existed in our society, both locally and globally, in terms of rights of the woman”. The Rector Dr. Carlos Saavedra indicated that “there has been substantial progress in recent years, as we have done in recent times in our house of studies and we have a substantive goal for the year 2023 and 2024 which is to achieve the Equality Seal Program of the United Nations for Development to generate all the institutional goals that allow to systematically mark the path towards the reduction of the gender gaps”.

The Vice Chancellor for Institutional Relations and Links with the Environment (VRIM) of the University of Concepción, Dr. Ximena Gauché Marchetti, revealed that “we are talking about commemorating a day that is historic and that for many decades international society and Chile have joined to that in the different institutions to remember the historical struggle of so many women to advance in that structural inequality that has often made women invisible in various spaces”.

Meanwhile, Dr. Lucía Saldaña Muñoz, director of Gender Equity and Sexual Diversity (DEGyD) at the University of Concepción, stressed that “in this act we seek to vindicate the historical struggles of women, as well as present the main challenges we want address as an institution to advance in our society in terms of gender equality”.

In the commemoration act, the director of Gender Equity and Sexual Diversity, Dr. Lucía Saldaña Muñoz presented the main work guidelines of the division she directs. “The work for 2023 is strongly linked to gender mainstreaming in all areas of management, work, training and research at the University, hand in hand with the certification process of the Gender Equality Seal that the University de Concepción signed in December 2022 with the United Nations Development Program,” he explained.

The act to commemorate International Women’s Day also considered the presentation of Dr. Beatriz Cid Aguayo, an academic from the Department of Sociology, who addressed the claim for women’s rights in Chile in the social, political and territorial sphere. “During the pandemic and the latest forest emergencies, needs and job opportunities in matters such as gender equality became evident, on the other hand, in the field of knowledge creation, women were invisible for a long time, so now It is important to advance in this line to reduce the gaps”. To close the act, the artist Jasmine Colina Ocando, a young violinist eradicated in Concepción, performed three musical pieces at the Jaime Baeza Auditorium of the University of Concepción.

Acts on the three university campuses

The traditional institutional act of commemoration held on March 8 will be replicated on the other campuses on Friday, March 10 at 11:00 a.m. simultaneously on the Chillán Campus and the Los Angeles Campus, with the aim of integrating the entire university community.

In this regard, the Vice Chancellor, Dr. Ximena Gauche Marchetti, explained that “the University of Concepción has made progress in mainstreaming the gender perspective both in institutional work, as well as in the different missions in training, research and outreach, and in that sense , we wanted to give it a different look with the work led by the Directorate of Gender Equity and Sexual Diversity of our University, making a comprehensive program so that all the departments that have wanted to join participate with acts that remember, commemorate and make visible the work of women. at the University of Concepción.

Upcoming activities at the UdeC

Within the framework of the commemoration of International Women’s Day, the launch of this exhibition “Us. In the name of none” that takes as a download the title of a collection of poems by Rosabetty Muñoz. The appointment is on Thursday, March 9, at 6:00 p.m. at the Casa del Arte UdeC. The exhibition will open to the public with an inauguration on Thursday, March 16, at the same time.

In addition, the VRIM Social Liaison Office invites you to participate on Thursday, March 9 from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Entrepreneurs Fair in the Plaza del Estudiante of the University of Concepción.

The week of commemoration will culminate with a concert organized by the Cultural Corporation of the University of Concepción on Friday, March 10 at 7:00 p.m. at the UdeC Theater. On the occasion, the Symphony Orchestra will tour works by great composers, such as Fanny Mendelssohn, Claudia Montero, Katherine Bachmann and Valeria Valle.
