Iranian authorities have sentenced the sister of a wrestler executed after being convicted of killing a security guard during an anti-government demonstration three years ago to five years’ house arrest.
Elham Afkari must also wear an electronic anklet to confirm that he is not leaving his home, the US-based organization Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) announced on Sunday.
His brother, Navid Afkari, was executed in 2020 despite international protests.
Elham had spent the last four months in a prison in the southern Iranian city of Shiraz after being arrested in November for allegedly sharing information with opposition media as part of the wave of protests over the death of the young Kurdish woman. Iranian Mahsa Amini in custody for allegedly wearing the veil incorrectly.
The information about his arrest has also been confirmed by his brother, Said.
