The High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell, will travel to Algeria on an official visit starting this Sunday, March 12, to strengthen bilateral relations between Algiers and the European bloc .
Borrell will meet with the country’s president, Abdelmayid Tebune, the prime minister, Aimene Benabderrahmane and the minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ramtane Lamamra.
According to Brussels, this visit, which will last until Monday, “will be an opportunity to discuss in depth to consolidate and expand the association between the European Union and Algeria.”
“The High Representative will explore areas of mutual interest covered by the EU-Algeria Association Agreement, with the aim of relaunching or further strengthening dialogue and cooperation,” the note added.
Likewise, the meetings will also allow debate on regional and international issues, including in particular the situation in the Sahel and “the common challenges in the current global context after the Russian aggression against Ukraine,” the statement concluded.
It should be noted that, in January, it was already known of Borrell’s intention to visit Algeria soon to try to resolve the blockade of exports of Spanish products to this country, after almost a year of crisis since Spain’s change of position regarding the plan of Moroccan autonomy for Western Sahara.
This is how the ‘president’ of the Valencian Generalitat, Ximo Puig, advanced it at the time, after meeting with Borrell in Brussels to convey to him the concern of the Valencian companies that export to Algeria for the “veto” on the entry of their products.
“Sooner rather than later, in the coming weeks or months”, according to the ‘president’, the European diplomat will visit Algeria to look for “reunion formulas”.
