The Government of the United States has praised this Thursday “the voice” of the people of Georgia in the defense of democracy, after Tbilisi has decided to reverse the proposed law on foreign agents due to the massive protests registered in recent days in the streets of the country.
“The thing about all of this is that over the last two weeks, but over several decades, the Georgian people have made it very clear with their voice, with their expression, that they want a democratic, prosperous and integrated Georgia. Euro-Atlantic region,” said US State Department spokesman Ned Price.
Thus, the State spokesman assured during a press conference that the United States “will continue to be a partner for those aspirations.”
Price has joined the statement of the US Embassy in Tbilisi, which has celebrated that “once again, the Georgian people have made it clear that the only option for Georgia is a secure and prosperous European future.”
Thus, the Embassy has welcomed the decision to withdraw the bills on foreign agents and has urged the ruling party not to continue with this type of legislation, as it is “incompatible with Georgian and European values and the protection of fundamental freedoms”.
“We encourage Georgia’s political leaders to work together earnestly on urgently needed reforms to gain the EU candidate status that Georgians overwhelmingly desire,” the diplomatic office’s statement read.
