The French president, Emmanuel Macron, has launched this Thursday a message of support for the protests in Tbilisi against the law of foreign agents that the Government intends to promote, and has assured that Georgia “can count on the friendship of France”.
“The commitment of Georgian men and women to democratic values, freedom of the press and freedom of association have been heard,” the French president said in a post on his official Twitter profile.
In this way, Macron has celebrated the decision of the Georgian authorities, after several days of protests, to reverse the proposed law on foreign agents that he intends to carry out, despite international criticism.
“Georgia, back towards Europe, knows that it can count on the friendship of France”, concluded the French head of state, thus alluding to the pro-European nature of the protests, in which flags of the European Union have been seen.
The vicinity of the Georgian Parliament, in Tbilisi, have hosted a series of citizen protests since Tuesday night against the law on foreign agents with which the Executive is trying to draw up a “black list” of entities and organizations financed by third countries.
After several days of protests and criticism from international organizations and powers –such as the European Union or the United States– the Government of Georgia has reversed the proposal, which had already received the go-ahead from Parliament to move forward with its processing.
Among the main criticisms of the law, and by extension of the Government itself, stands out not only the “Russian character” that the opposition attributes to the legislation, but also its distance from the community values of the European Union, a body to which Georgia has aspirations to adhere.
