The President of Taiwan, Tsai Ing Wen, confirmed this Thursday that she will travel to the United States, where she plans to meet with the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the North American country, Kevin McCarthy, despite warnings from the Government of China.
Tsai has indicated that, indeed, he will make a stop in the United States to meet with McCarthy in the state of California on his way to Guatemala and Belize, according to information from the newspaper ‘South China Morning Post’.
From Beijing they have reiterated that the visit to the United States by the Taiwanese leader would mean a “violation of the country’s sovereignty since Taiwan is part of China.”
However, the head of the North American affairs department of Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry, Douglas Hsu, has warned that China “does not have the right to single out anyone for their contacts and interactions with other countries.”
McCarthy himself confirmed on Wednesday that he will receive the president of Taiwan on a visit scheduled for this year and has rejected for the moment that he will travel to the island. “This has nothing to do with my trip, whether or not I’m going to Taiwan,” he said.
However, McCarthy has pointed out that China will not condition their movements: “They cannot tell me where I can or cannot go.” Likewise, he has stated that he would like to visit the island and go there with a group of deputies.
